Our Research Facility

The CRIC at SAHMRI is a purpose-built, state-of-the-art imaging facility equipped with a Siemens Biograph mCT PET/CT scanner, supported by a multidisciplinary team of Nuclear Medicine Physicians, Technologists and research coordinators. Our proximity to the SAHMRI research precinct positions us at the forefront of translational imaging research in South Australia.

Current PET and Nuclear Medicine Research Focus Areas

Neurodegenerative Imaging

Our primary research focus is on neurological imaging, with a particular emphasis on dementia and neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

We offer research-based brain PET imaging using both amyloid and tau tracers – 2 key biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s pathology. These tracers enable researchers to characterise the biological substrate of cognitive decline in living patients, a critical step in developing and testing disease-modifying therapies.

We also offer private clinical 18F-FBB (florbetaben) amyloid brain imaging for patients outside of clinical trials, providing referring specialists with valuable diagnostic information in cases of suspected Alzheimer’s disease or atypical dementia.

Theranostics and Targeted Radionuclide Therapy

As the field of theranostics – the combination of targeted imaging and therapy using radiopharmaceuticals – continues to evolve rapidly, Jones Radiology is actively engaged with external research stakeholders to participate in clinical trials investigating novel radiopharmaceutical treatments. These trials provide eligible patients with access to cutting-edge therapies that extend beyond current standard-of-care options.

Lutetium-177-PSMA Theranostics Program

Jones Radiology is proud to offer Lutetium-177 PSMA (LuPSMA) therapy for men with advanced prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. This innovative treatment works by delivering targeted radiation directly to prostate cancer cells, wherever they have spread, while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The therapy has been extensively studied in Australia through major clinical trials, which have shown it to be a safe and effective option that can extend life and improve quality of life, with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. Before starting treatment, patients will meet with one of our Nuclear Medicine specialists to discuss whether LuPSMA therapy is suitable for them and will need some work-up PET scans and blood tests to help with this decision.

LuPSMA therapy at Jones Radiology is offered as a comprehensive, privately funded program, with some Medicare support available for eligible patients. Medicare funding is available for patients who have previously received certain hormone and chemotherapy treatments, and who have confirmed PSMA-positive disease on a PET scan.
