Ultrasound is a safe and painless type of imaging that is used to assess the internal organs and structures of the abdomen, pelvis, neck and scrotum.
The ultrasound is performed by a sonographer. First, a gel will be applied to the skin on the body part being examined, and then the sonographer will move the ultrasound probe over the skin surface to generate an image from sound waves that travel into your body. The sonographer may need to apply pressure or ask you to hold your breath or move into a certain position to help visualise the area of concern.
The images are looked at by a radiologist who will provide a written report for your doctor. The radiologist may sometimes speak to you in person during your examination.
Please refer to the specific ultrasound procedure you are having to get the appropriate preparation advice.
