Ultrasound can be used to assess components of the musculoskeletal system such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, bursa and joints.

At Jones Radiology we have a team of specialised radiologists and sonographers experienced in all facets of musculoskeletal imaging and image guided procedures.

As it provides real time visualisation it can be used to assess movement and is commonly used to guide musculoskeletal injections, e.g. corticosteroid injections.

Common reasons for undertaking this scan include injury, pain, and reduced motion.

As ultrasound has some limitations in assessing deeper structures and cannot see inside of joints, in many situations it should be complemented with Xrays, and it will be important to bring these (and any other relevant imaging, e.g. CT scans, MRI scans) with you.

Your examination will be performed by a sonographer. Upon being taken into the examination room the sonographer will introduce themselves and confirm your identity and examination .

A clear gel is applied to the skin over the area to be examined. The ultrasound probe is then moved over the surface to study the structures below. During the study you may be asked to move into certain positions to allow visualisation and assess movement.

Once adequate images have been obtained a radiologist (specialist medical doctor) will review the sonographer’s images, and provide a written report for your doctor. Radiologists may attend your examination to personally examine and discuss your issues, while viewing images in real time. The radiologist will perform any requested ultrasound guided injections.
