A DOTA PET/CT (often referred to as a DOTATATE PET) is a highly specialised nuclear medicine imaging procedure used to detect and assess neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) throughout the body. It offers exceptional sensitivity and specificity compared with conventional imaging alone, enabling earlier detection and more precise staging of this complex group of cancers.

What Are Neuroendocrine Tumours?

Neuroendocrine tumours are a diverse group of cancers that arise from neuroendocrine cells found throughout the body. They are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, but can also affect the pancreas and other organs.

How It Works

The DOTA peptide tracer is a radioactive compound that binds specifically to somatostatin receptors – proteins that are expressed in high numbers on the surface of most neuroendocrine tumour cells. This targeted binding enables the PET scanner to identify even small tumour deposits with high precision, while the CT component provides detailed anatomical localisation.

What to Expect

On arrival, a technologist will complete a clinical questionnaire. A cannula is placed in a vein in your arm, and you will be settled into a private uptake room with a recliner and television. The Gallium-68 DOTA peptide tracer is administered, and you will rest for approximately 1 hour while it circulates. The scan itself takes between 10 and 15 minutes and typically covers from the head to the mid-thigh. Most patients remain fully clothed, with large metal items removed.

Scan Preparation

  • 500 mL of water in the hour leading up to your appointment.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery or large metal items.
  • No fasting required unless specified by your referring doctor.

Important – Patient Scheduling for Neuroendocrine PET

Jones Radiology produces the Gallium-68-DOTA peptide tracer for Neuroendocrine PET on site and must ensure patients are scheduled in groups. Referrals should be sent directly to our Kurralta Park clerical team where patients will be contacted directly with a suitable appointment time.
