A CT scan can be performed of any part of the body that your doctor needs to see in order to diagnose a problem, to better define a known problem, or to monitor for changes.
Depending on the part of the spine to be imaged, you will lie either feet-first or head-first on your back.
If it is your cervical spine, you will be head-first, and your head and neck will pass through the scanner.
If it is your thoracic or lumbar spine, you will have your arms above your head, and your legs and abdomen/chest will pass through the scanner.
Usually there is no contrast required. Read more information on IV contrast.
Before your Scan
Before the scan, you may be asked to change into an examination gown for your comfort, and to ensure clothing does not affect the images and diagnostic quality of the scan. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, eye-glasses and any metal objects that might interfere with the images.
Duration
15 minutes.
