What is persistent pain?

Persistent pain is pain that lasts or recurs for longer than three months. It’s more common than many people realise, and it can affect daily life, work, sleep and general wellbeing. Yet pain is often dismissed or lived with rather than discussed.

How can imaging help?

Medical imaging, including X-ray, CT, MRI and Ultrasound, can help your healthcare team look inside the body to identify or rule out possible causes of pain. In some cases, image-guided procedures may also support ongoing care. This isn’t the right step for everyone, and your GP is best placed to guide the most appropriate care for your symptoms.

For some patients, imaging can support pain management directly as well as diagnosis — guiding image-guided treatments such as joint injections, nerve treatments and other targeted therapies. These are considered by your GP or specialist on a case-by-case basis, as part of a broader pain management plan.

When should you speak with your GP?

  • Pain lasting more than a few weeks
  • Pain that’s getting worse
  • Pain affecting your work, sleep or daily activities

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth speaking with your GP about the best next steps for you and how radiology can help with your journey.

Jones Radiology is proud to support National Pain Week by helping our community understand pain a little better, and by continuing to provide trusted, accurate diagnostic imaging and treatment procedures across South Australia.
