Clinical Professor Barras is a Diagnostic and Academic Neuroradiologist at Jones Radiology, Staff Specialist at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Research Fellow at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology at The University of Adelaide.
Clinical Professor Barras completed his medical degrees at Monash University (MBBS (Hons), BMedSc (Hons)) in 1999. He completed anatomy and surgery qualifications at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne and The University of Melbourne (Part 1 FRACS, DipSurgAnat, DipOMS). He was the Stroke Imaging Fellow at Royal Melbourne Hospital, serving for four years on the first Acute Code Stroke team at the hospital (2006-09). Whilst a Radiology Registrar at RMH from 2010-14, he completed both Master of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy theses on Imaging Predictors in Stroke Evaluation at the University of Melbourne (MMed, PhD), both passed without revision. In 2015, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR).
Clinical Professor Barras has broad experience in public and private radiology practice and teleradiology, including all Neuroradiology, General Radiology and mammography.
In 2015-16 he was a Diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellow at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, Charing Cross Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London, served as the Lead Fellow in 2016 and became the second Australian to serve as a substantive Consultant Neuroradiologist at Queen Square in 2017.
His research has been published in Stroke, The American Journal of Neuroradiology, Journal of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery, World Neurosurgery, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, has been presented at national and international research meetings and was awarded the Toshiba Prize for best scientific presentation by the RANZCR in 2012. He is the lead author of the Neuroanatomy Chapter in the European Society of Neuroradiology textbook, Clinical Neuroradiology with Prof. Tarek Yousry (UK) and Prof. Frederick Barkhof (NL). He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology and reviewer for Neurocritical Care.
Clinical Professor Barras is an experienced anatomy teacher and examiner since 2002, was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Teaching nominated by his students at The University of Melbourne in 2011. He co-convened the Australian and New Zealand Society of Neuroradiology Society (ANZSNR) Meeting in 2019 and is the South Australian Councillor of the Society.
Clinical Professor Barras joined the staff of Jones Radiology in 2018 with subspecialty expertise in all aspects of Adult Diagnostic Neuroradiology including advanced brain imaging techniques and spinal pain procedures, Functional MRI, Head and Neck Imaging, Dental/Maxillofacial Imaging and Emergency/Trauma Radiology. In 2019 he became a Diagnostic and Academic Neuroradiologist at Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he conducts a prolific research and popular teaching program.
He is a leader of the Calvary Wakefield Private Neurology and Neurosurgical multidisciplinary meetings and is pleased to be consulted on all Neuroimaging and General Radiology referrals.
